We are using Zoom a lot though our University-hosted site for basically all our meetings during the lockdown, like about a zillion other people.

I came across !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! yesterday. It reminds me that it’s not so simple a thing to keep your personal data out of the hands of the data miners. “St ay safe” is the new mantra in our society, but keeping your information safe is more complicated than washing your hands, isn’t it?

As they say: If you aren’t paying for it , you’re not the customer, you’re the product being sold.

I just sent a similar article to my wife, who works for a Major University™ in Texas. They are using the hell out of Zoom, and our school district will likely be using it as well.

It sounds like this is a common problem with apps that use Facebook’s library for logging in.

I’m no fan of Zoom’s past bad practices but they’re not entirely  to blame.

Here’s their response: https://blog.zoom.us/wordpress/2020/03/27/zoom-use-of-facebook-sdk-in-ios-client/

Also, apparently Zoom bombing is a thing - random people can (in the right circumstances) join your meeting and start sharing porn or hate crime stuff.

It sure is.  But that article is good to read. At least they have the grace to realize this is not the greatest thing.

Really?  I had no idea that was possible.  If it ever happens to one of us, it will immediately cease to be a tool that I will use for classes, no matter what they say afterward.

Kind of O/T, but I thought you might appreciate this TX Monthly article.

Zoom has some panopticon-ish features, like reporting who doesn’t have the window focused for a long period of time

Neat . I mean, it reads mostly like a pat on the back for a Texas business, but still, it’s cool to see businesses pivot and deal with change like that.

It’s just nice to see people actually prepared for something like this. The US gov’t had a plan they put together in 2016 for this and Trump ignored it.

I wouldn’t be lulled into thinking this was a Trump specific problem and if we got rid of him this wouldn’t happen. The truth is that our government’s history is littered with reports and studies started by one administration and forgotten by the next. It’ll probably happen again.

Good on HEB though for realizing that their supply chain isn’t always a sure thing and moves with works events.

In a recent update, passwords are set for all new meetings by default. I suspect this is why. Never happened to us either and we have been heavy users for years we do all of our meetings without passwords

I saw an article about it too. My kids’ schools aren’t using it. We don’t use it for work either. Our options are paid, so security is pretty tight as far as I know.

I was reading that. We’ll be Zoom proctoring another test Monday, and we’ll see how it changes.

I suspect our kinds of meetings are low enough profile that they fall under the radar of the sophomoric miscreants.  That may change with this environment though.

Can you tell me details of what you and the school use? I’m interested in options.

Also, and this is for immediate use, I would like to find another internet polling option to give my quiz Tuesday. Setting up an ExamSoft test with password seems excessive for a 5 minute quiz, but I want something with a record of the answers so I can award the points. Zoom has a polling feature that can do it, but I’ m not sure it’s the best option, partly because it would be pretty easy to cheat. If you know of anything worth looking into, we can email about it.

Our company uses WebEx, Bridgit, and Cisco Jabber. Jabber is a full instant messenger and telephony suite. WebEx supports scheduling, user notification, and with the right tier, will call all the users instead of requiring a call-in number. Bridgit is the simplest solution we use. It’s primarily a method for sharing desktops, but if you have a separate call-in number, it can be shared through the Bridgit interface.

My daughter has only one class which requires a live conference call. They are using Skype. My son has two classes which have a weekly call. Unfortunately, he made a liar out of me and when he told me they are using Zoom. I would have sworn they were using something else.

As for surveys, the only thing I’ve used online would be SurveyMonkey. It’s free and it works well enough.

If you want to try out any of the conferencing options, shoot me an e-mail and I’ll set up a few calls for you to try out the interfaces.

Thanks, I’ll think through the options!

My daughter’s school has started using Zoom for daily meetings and this app called SeeSaw for making and handing in assignments. The teachers had a short couple of days after spring break for training on remote education techniques, and then began engaging the students with a vengeance. The science teacher has become a little too enthusiastic, coming up with assignment ideas at all hours and deciding to make them our the next day. He needed to be reined in a little.

Get this though, they tried to tell the kids that they will be required to wear their school uniforms during the school Zoom meetings.  No freakin way that’s gonna fly. Heh heh.
